passed away June 2, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents Dewitt A Hurst, Sr and Fredrica D Hurst; her brothers, Joe Hurst, Fred Hurst; a sister, Carolyn Hinson (Wayne). She is survived by her brothers, Dewitt A Hurst, Jr, Bill Hurst, Duncan Hurst, John Hurst; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mary was a loving person that never met a stranger. She was in the first group home for special needs with four other girls. Mary graduated from Edgewood Elementary School and was very active in the Special Olympics where she was awarded many gold medals. Even competing in the National Special Olympics in New Orleans in canoeing. She loved swimming, canoeing, and camping. She was employed by Smith Enterprises and the Board of Disabilties and special needs workshop. Mary was a member of Epworth UMC where memorial may be made to the Epworth Childrens Home in Columbia , SC. A funeral will be held Thursday, JAnuary 4, 2018 at 2pm in the Epworth UMC with a private graveside to follow. The family will receive friends from 1pm Thursday until service time.
