My fondest memories growing up in Vandalia-Butler schools always seem to come back to Smith Jr. High. The last year at Smith was a specail year, especially for the Freshman football team. Mr. Reed coached the lineman while Mr. Dyer coached the backs. I ended up playing center and middle guard and was always there in the middle when someone on offense would jump off-sides. Back then you could come across the line as defense and thump the center. Mr. Reed suggested I should not be happy when someone jumped off, so we started a ritual where I would playfully kick the offender in the rear. As I said it was a special year and we were 6-0 going into the last week of practice. To our surprise on the last offical practice, out comes both coaches in pads to play with us. Fun times....except a certain "senior" lineman jumped offsides so I got to go over and give him a boot. I will always cherish that year in school and the men that made it special.
New moon is no moon, no moon is new moon.... Rest in peace sir.... you will be missed but not forgotten.
