Duane was my father in law for about 10 years. He was rough, tough and gruff. He was what they used to call a real "man's man" (like John Wayne). He liked to pretend all he cared about was fishing and hunting but beneath that outer exterior there lived a truly loving man. He loved his beautiful wife Pam, his mother in law Winnie , his sons and their wives, Mike and Mary and Gary and Mary and especially his daughter Lori and his son in law Bill. He adored his 3 grandsons and his great grandchildren. He was a cool grandpa to my son Joshua, He would meet us at West Branch and whisk Josh off to an incredible Manistee vaction where he was spoiled rotten by Winnie and Pam and taugt to love natural Michigan by one of its greatest fansHe was a great teacher. For such a big man, he strode lightly. Whether throwing a line in on his favorite creek, pulling up to admire Lake Michigan on a cold wintry day, going to breakfast with his buddies, going up to hunting camp with his brothers and friends, walking with one of his numerous bird dogs especially Shawnie, his irish setter or hanging around the house full of family on a holiday, Duane always had a twinkle in his eye.He had a modesty about his war accomplishments that is truly humbling. I see him now again with his wonderful wife Pam. Or standing in knee deep in a Manistee County river, throwing a homemade fly into the pristine dark northern water where the fish are always biting good. Happy Trails to you Duane!
