Obituary for Elinor Maxiene Waddell

Elinor Maxiene Waddell
Waddell, Elinor Maxiene, nee Matiets (July 5th 1929 - January 7th 2018). Peacefully, with family by her side, passed away at the Health Sciences Centre at the age of 88. She will be forever missed by her son Max, daughter-in-law Krista, grandson Jaden Ross who was the prize of her life, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Maxym and Anna Matiets, husband Ross Waddell, sisters Mary, Pauline, Olga, Lena, Elsie and brother John. Elinor was born in Elphinstone Manitoba. She endured a very early loss in her life as her father succumbed to a horse and wagon accident prior to her birth. Times were tough in those days, and she took on many small jobs to make ends meet, including playing piano at country dances at 16 years of age. She attended teachers college in Winnipeg at the age of 17 and began her lengthy teaching career at Horod Country School #1364. Shortly thereafter, she met the love of her life Robert Gordon Ross Waddell and they were married on July 5th 1952. They took on the world together, working in many towns throughout western Manitoba, including venturing into the hotel business in Hamiota, Russell and eventually Strathclair. Elinor worked her days at school and the hotel at night. 1969 was a special year with the arrival of their son William Maxwell. In 1976 Ross passed away leaving her with the responsibility to raise Max on her own. A special lifelong bond was formed between mother and son. Elinor was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, always putting others’ needs first. Elinor was also the envy of many of Max’s friends as they wished she could be their Mom too. Elinor loved to spend time at the cottage at Sandy Lake. It was a place where family and many friends would gather. After leaving her residence in Strathclair in 2004, she moved to the Westman Lions Manor in Brandon Manitoba. This new home allowed for the formation of many new friendships and years of happiness. Elinor was known for her unique skillset in crocheting and knitting with many being the lucky recipient of an afghan or doily. Elinor believed very strongly in community work, as she was a member of the Eastern Star for over 60 years. One of Elinor’s other favourite pastimes was to watch her grandson Jaden play hockey. Mom (Mama), you have taught us many valuable lessons in life. The most important of all, to treat others as you wish to be treated. You were always there when we needed you most, and for that, we are eternally grateful. We will miss you deeply and you will never be forgotten. A graveside service will be held on July 5th, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. at the Bend Cemetery, Strathclair, Manitoba.
