Life Story for Corethia Lavern Copes

Corethia Lavern Copes
Obituary

Corethia Lavern Copes, the daughter of late Gladys Marie Copes and James Bailey, departed this life on Saturday, January 6, 2018, following a lengthy illness, which she fought bravely. We are gathered here to pay tribute to her life and to cherish her memory.

She was born on August 4, 1959 in Hallwood, Virginia, the eldest of Gladys Copes’ three children. Corethia received her education through the Accomack County public school system. She continued her education by attending Norfolk State University, Woodbridge Business Institute, and Wor-Wic Community College where she received her certificate in medical transcription.

Corethia settled in Salisbury, Maryland and later became a member of Wesley Temple United Methodist Church where she was an active participant in the Gospel Choir. At one point she was the secretary, a member of the Chancellor Choir, and the assistant director of the youth choir. She always loved to sing, since her high school days, and singing with the choir provided her with some of her happiest moments.

Adaptability is a part of life and Corethia used that in all the places that she worked. From the NASA base in Wallops Island to Eastern Shore Seafood, Perdue, Roses, Sears, Wal-Mart, and finally Verizon in Dover, Delaware, from where she retired in 2002.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her daughter, Chandra; siblings, Christal, Chantel, Marva, Linda, Bonnie, Connie, Vincent, Garvus, and Garret; three aunts, Mary, Althea, and Bernice; two surviving uncles, Frank Jr. and Lloyd as well as several nieces, nephews, godchildren and a host of cousins, friends and her church family. The family would also like to acknowledge Wanda Harmanson, Corethia’s cousin and best friend since childhood, who was there for her throughout her life.

Corethia Copes was someone who left an imprint on the lives of everyone she met. She will be missed terribly by her friends and family.
