Obituary for Margaret Elizabeth Hillier (Coombs)
Margaret Elizabeth Coombs was born in Melfort on July 31, 1923. She was the first child of John Tracy (Jack) and Clara Irene (Daisy) Coombs. She grew up with her twin sisters, Phyllis and Evelyn on a farm near Pleasant Valley. She attended Flett Springs School. When Margaret was nine years old, tragedy struck the family and her mother passed away suddenly on June 14, 1933 at the age of 36. Jack married Agnes Lindberg in 1936 and Margaret was blessed with two sisters, Bernice and Lois.
As a young girl, Margaret enjoyed sports, especially softball. She also enjoyed skating on the creek near her home. After completing grade ten, Margaret worked at Safeway and O. K. in Melfort. In 1948, Margaret started dating Avery and on September 27, 1949, they were married and resided in the Pathow area. They were blessed with three wonderful sons, Ron, Lynn and Larry. Her family was the major focus of her life.
Margaret was a loving wife and mother. She was a busy homemaker who took pride in her baking skill, always having all kinds of goodies on hand for the family. She enjoyed curling and participated in many bonspiels at the local curling rink. Lots of her spare time was spent playing cards with friends and neighbors. Margaret also loved to watch soap operas. She was an active member of the Royal Canadian Auxiliary and Legion. In 1984, Margaret and Avery bought a house and moved to Melfort. After Avery's stroke in 1995, they bought a condominium at Elk Pointe Place. In 2013, Margaret moved to Caleb Village in Humboldt. When her health failed in 2015, she moved to St. Mary's Villa and lived there until her passing.
Margaret is survived by her daughter-in-law, YVONNE and family, LINDSAY; SHANE (Taylor) and children, Lyla and Grady; son, LYNN (Josephine) and family, NORM (Linda) and children, Diandra, Kevin and Kelly; FREIDA (Don) and daughter, Alexa; son, LARRY (Barb). She is also survived by her sisters, Bernice (Cecil) Lawrence and Lois (Clint) Tetarenko as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Margaret was predeceased by her parents, John (Jack) and Clara (Daisy) Coombs, stepmother Agnes Coombs, husband Avery, son Ron, grandson Kurtis, sisters Phyllis Lawrence and Evelyn Sutton, in laws Lorrine and Nellie Hillier, Percy Lawrence, Jack Sutton, nephew David Levin, Grace and Bob Williamson, Audrey and Joe Morton and niece Jill Morton. She will be greatly missed.
