Philip P "Phil, Smitty"  Smith
Philip P. “Phil” “Smitty” Smith, 75, of Otter River, died Monday, January 15, 2018 in UMASS Memorial Medical Center of Worcester, following a brief illness.
Born in Gardner on October 14, 1942, he was the son of the late Francis E. and Henrietta S. (Hetnik) Smith.
Phil graduated from Narragansett Regional High School of Baldwinville with the Class of 1961.
He was employed in the shipping and receiving department of Garlock Printing and Converting Corporation of Gardner for 17 years, prior to retiring in 2007. He was previously employed by Temple Stuart Furniture Company of Baldwinville for 28 years.
Phil dedicated 50 years to his community as an on-call Firefighter with the Town of Templeton Fire Department. He was a member of St. Martin’s Church of Otter River and Holy Cross Church of Templeton. He was also a member of the Otter River Sportsman’s Club of Templeton.
He enjoyed walking, blueberry picking and his daily visits to Fitness Concepts. Phil took great pride in attending his grandchildren’s events, and he loved spending time at Well’s Beach in Maine and Disneyworld with his family.
Phil leaves his wife of 54 years, Shirley A. (Long) Smith, of Otter River; three daughters, Pam A. Smith of Winchendon, Phyllis J. Latour of E. Templeton, and Patty L. Fleming and her husband David of Hubbardston; two brothers, John A. Smith and his wife Stella of Templeton and Francis E. Smith, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC; six grandchildren, Alina, Matthew, Emily, Justin, Hannah and Bryce; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 20th at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, 25 Lake Avenue, Templeton.
There are no calling hours. Family and friends are asked to report directly to the church the morning of the services.
Memorial contributions may be made to Heywood Hospital, Intensive Care Unit, 242 Green Street, Gardner, MA 01440, or to the Special Olympics Massachusetts, 512 Forest Street, Marlboro, MA 01752. Please reference in memory of Philip P. Smith.
