Obituary for Dr. James R. Smith

Dr. James R. Smith, 88, of Germantown, Tennessee, passed away unexpectedly on January 16. He was born on Dec. 22, 1929, in Carroll County, Tennessee, to Marvin P. and Ruthie Smith.

He was predeceased by his parents and by his first wife, Peggy Smith. He leaves his daughter, Suzanne Smith Miller (Joey); grandson Justin Miller (Jessica); granddaughter, Allison. Also he leaves his wife, Marlene Petree Smith, her daughters, Margee Petree Mays (Mike); Janet Petree Dreyer of Indianapolis; grandchildren Josh Mays (Jamie); Stacy Hubner (Jon); and great grandchildren Caden and Cassidy Hubner; and Colton Michael Mays.

He graduated from Central High in Bruceton, TN, and attended Murray State College, U T Martin, finally attending UT Dental School in Memphis, obtaining his Doctor of Dental Science in 1955. He immediately went into the Army and upon his tour of duty served in the Army Reserves for several years. Upon discharge from the reserves, he opened his dental office in Memphis and practiced for 50 years before his retirement in 2004.

Dr. Smith was a faithful member of the Germantown church of Christ. He formerly served as a deacon and later as elder at Union Avenue church of Christ and Woodland Hills Church of Christ . He devoted his time unselfishly serving God throughout his adult life.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 21, from 1:00 –3:00 pm with the funeral service beginning at 3:00 pm at Germantown church of Christ, 8723 Poplar Pike, 38138. Internment at Forest Hill East Cemetery on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be sent to Germantown Church (Missions).
