Gary James Nachtigal was born on February 23, 1949 to James and Mary (Fite) Nachtigal in Mitchell, SD. He graduated from Platte High School in1967 and served in the National Guard for six years. On April 8, 1971 Gary was united in marriage to Anita Dimick at Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church in Platte, SD. Together they made their home in rural Academy, SD, beginning a lifelong career in farming and raising their three children.

Gary’s passion for agriculture began at age 8, when his dad put him to work raking hay. Shortly after graduating high school, Gary made his first land purchase. Over the next 50 years Gary’s hard-working attitude and innate business sense led him and his family to grow a successful diversified farming and ranching operation in south-central and central South Dakota. Gary was an early adapter to new technology that made agriculture more efficient and sustainable during his career. Gary was proficient in all aspects of farm business operations. He thrived on deal-making challenges that were fair to both parties. Gary insisted all farm work be completed in a timely manner.

While farming didn’t leave much leisure time, Gary did enjoy spending time with his children and grandchildren. Widely traveled over his lifetime, Gary discovered a myriad of interesting destinations. Friends and business associates also played an important role in Gary’s life. Gary was a fan of playing cards, fishing, hunting, and catching up on the latest sporting events. Gary was a member of the United Church of Christ in Academy.

Gary left a legacy that will carry on for generations to come.

Grateful for having shared in Gary’s life: his wife of over 46 years, Anita Nachtigal of Platte, SD; three children: Melissa (Mark) Godber of Tea, SD, Jason (Vera) Nachtigal and Colin (Heather) Nachtigal both of Pierre, SD; seven grandchildren: Claire and Jesse Godber, Adalynn and Nolan Nachtigal, Pablo, Susie and Taz; 2 brothers: Don (Deb) Nachtigal and Dave Nachtigal both of Platte, SD; two sisters: Kathy Pranger and Karen (Rollie) Warejcka both of Platte, SD; mother-in-law, Shirley Dimick of Sioux Falls, SD; two sisters-in-law: Marla (Ron) McLaughlin of Sioux Falls, SD and Carol (Doug) Sudchak of British Columbia, Canada; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
