Allen Charles Polly was born on October 7, 1927, on his grandparent’s farm in Dakota County, NE, the son of Charles and Lillian (Curry) Polly. As a young child his family moved to Yankton, SD. Allen received his education in Yankton and graduated from Yankton High School in 1945. He worked at Nelson’s Delivery and Nelly’s Service Station. Allen began his career with Inter City Bus Company in 1946 as a charter bus driver. In his earlier years with the company, Allen was based in Yankton, Rapid City and Kimball, SD before moving to Platte, SD. Allen was united in marriage to Joyce Veldheer on December 29, 1954 at the Christian Reformed Church in Platte. Allen and Joyce were blessed with three children, Robert “Bob”, Pegge and Linda. Allen’s career as a bus driver spanned nearly 44 years, when he retired in 1990. He held many fond memories of the many miles he put on during his career and the people he met along the way. He also worked as a janitor for the Platte schools from 1976 until 1990. In his retirement, Allen continued life on the road as he spent a number of years working for his brother-in-law, at Jack’s Campers, making trips to Indiana, picking up campers, parts and toppers. He, along with Joyce spent nearly nine years working for Harold Steele and his brother-in-law, Jim Veldheer caring for their properties in the Platte area.

Allen enjoyed many hobbies in his retirement as well. He golfed, bowled, hunted and could often be found in the summer at the river, fishing for walleye, with many of his dear friends. Allen had a passion for flying, and proudly earned his pilot’s license in 1979. He was also an excellent craftsman, spending many hours in his shop making many shelves and valances for his family and his own home. He spent many mornings and afternoon enjoying coffee breaks with his friends. He and Joyce always made time to travel. They enjoyed many chartered bus trips, as well as traveling to California to visit their daughter, and Florida and Michigan to visit relatives. More than anything, Allen loved his family dearly, and cherished the time he had to spend with them.

Allen was a member of First Reformed Church in Platte, where he served on the church’s consistory. He also served on the Platte City Council and the Hospital Board of Directors. Allen truly was a servant of God. He gave countless hours of his time giving to his community and church. A gentle and loving person, he will be remembered for his caring and giving heart.

Grateful for having shared his life, is his wife of 63 years, Joyce Polly, of Platte, SD; three children: Bob (Betty) Polly of Mitchell, SD, Pegge (Basil) Jennette of Citrus Heights, CA and Linda (Paul) Hentges of Humboldt, SD; five grandchildren: Nic (Angela), Rachel (Drew), Luke (Lisa), Mitch and Ben (fiancé, Ashley); three great grandchildren: Luke, Elijah and Kainoa; four step great grandchildren: Dylan, McKenna, Jayda and Issak; and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews and relatives.
