I remember the weekend that I fell in love with Alice. It must have been 1980, because I don’t think we had any of the boys…Owen, Andrew or Ian. Holly has a better memory for this than I do.
Holly and Mark had invited us up to her parent’s farm for the weekend. Holly had left early from NYC, and we followed after work. Driving up, we stopped for dinner at a Friendly’s. A couple hours later, we arrived. All was just great until in the middle of the night, the three of us became violently ill. We tried to blame the sushi we’d had at lunch in Mark’s studio. It’d been left from a shoot with a client. It was Friendly's!
We tied up the bathrooms in Alice’s house for the entire weekend. It was dreadful. I was as sick as I think I’ve ever been. There was Alice, taking care of us. We could here her cheerfully in the kitchen, laughing, and talking. She checked on us regularly. Even when you’re an adult, there is nothing better than having a ‘mom’ when you are sick.
That was the moment that I fell in love with her. Many fairs, card games, craft shows, family dinners, Eagle ceremonies, and weddings came afterward. Years of her laughter and joy filled the days we’ve spent with the Kozlowski-Ziemke family. Alice was always there…the heart and soul.
I appreciate every moment I had with her. She is the last of each of our moms and I will dearly miss her.
