Obituary for Forrest Junior "Fadeaway" Shields
On Friday, February 2, 2018, Forrest “Fade-Away” Shields entered into eternal life. He was born on September 3, 1960 to Alberta Shields and the late Forrest Davis, Sr. at Northampton-Accomack Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox, Virginia.
Forrest joined New Mt. Zion Baptist Church on October 5, 1975 under the leadership of Rev. Willie Carter. His spiritual life was important to him, so he rededicated his life to God under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Charles Kellam. He would also attend Antioch Baptist Church with his cousin, Theresa, whenever he visited New Jersey.
In 1979, Forrest graduated from Central High School in Painter, Virginia. While in high school, he played basketball and was well-known for his fadeaway shot. As an adult, he continued to play in the Accomack County Parks and Recreation league, still captivating the fans with his moves.
“Fade,” as he was affectionately called, was well known in his community for his love and zest for life. No matter where he went he treated people with respect and kindness, and gave them a good joke. He always had something funny to say, especially if he saw that you were down. Many in the community began calling him “Family,” because of the bond they shared; to know him was to love him.
In his younger days, Fade was known for his flair for fashion. He wore a suit everyday, like his late uncles, Charlie-Boy and Sugar-Boy. GQ magazine’s models had nothing on him when it came to style. He was always stepping with pride.
Forrest enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his siblings, Monica, Cyrus, Patrick, Kim, Marvin, and Michael. They shared many special moments and always had a good time. He also had a special relationship with his cousins, who were more like siblings to him. The family gatherings afforded them the opportunity to laugh and enjoy being family, especially watching sporting events. Fade’s favorite team was the Philadelphia 76’ers.
He worked at several places, including Perdue Farms, Kluis Nursery, and most recently, Harmon Lawn Services in Painter. He also loved to help his neighbors, he would do odd jobs like painting for them.
Forrest had a close relationship with Cyrus and the family referred to them as the Chief and the Deputy. Cyrus would make sure Fade’s meals were ready when he came home from work. When Fade became ill, Cyrus attended to his daily needs while he resided in Bayside Health and Rehabilitation Center.
During his illness he appreciated all the love shown by his family, his pastor, Rev. Dr. Charles Kelllam, Sr., his church family, and Rev. Willie Carter, whom he had developed a special bond with through the years. The prayers, cards, and various expressions of love brought him so much joy.
He was preceded in death by his father, Forrest Davis, Sr.; sisters, Monica Shields and Linda Davis; grandparents, Edna Davis, Lucinda Shields, and Clarence Shields.
Forrest leaves to cherish his memories: his mother, Alberta Shields; loving sister, Kim Bailey of Painter, VA; devoted brothers, Cyrus Shields of Painter, VA, Patrick (Charlene) Shields of Atlanta, GA, Marvin (Bonnie) Shields of Yorktown, VA, Michael (Priscilla) Shields of St. Michael’s, MD, Charles Davis of Philadelphia, PA, and Forrest (Nellie) Davis of Painter, VA; loving and supportive aunts, Margaret Shields and Corrine Shields, both of NJ, Gustina Harmon of MD, Glendora Davis of Philadelphia, PA, and Luagia Mapp of Hare Valley, VA; nieces, Sharika Bailey, Sherices Shields and Meghan Shields; nephews, Craig, Jr. “CJ” (LaShari) Bailey, Christopher Carroll, Marquie (Tramika) Davis, Forrest (Jasmine) Davis, Qintoin (Dontranette) Davis; special great nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
