Obituary for Sandra Novarre Hamilton (Grant)

Sandra Novarre Hamilton (Grant)
Hamilton, Sandra Novarre [Grant] It is with great sadness that the family of Sandra Hamilton (nee Grant) announces her passing on Sunday, February 4th at the Temiskaming Hospital following her courageous fight with cancer. She was surrounded by her family and their love. She was in her 82nd year, born June 18, 1936, in Orillia.

She will be deeply missed by her loving husband James Hamilton, daughter Nancy Hamilton (Tony Mahood) of Squamish, BC; son Hugh Hamilton (Andrea) of Newmarket; and daughter Cathy Beauchamp (Richard) of Coleman Township. Nana will be missed by her grandchildren: Brendan Urlocker; Alex, Erica, Drew Hamilton, and Sabrina & Randy Beauchamp. Also left to mourn is her sister Kerry Rusk (Tom) of Ottawa, sister-in-law Patricia Grant of Meaford and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Esther and Hugh Grant and brother Charles Grant. Sandi had many friends in both the North and in the Collingwood area where she and Jim led an active retirement for 25 years.

Sandi’s youth was spent moving to a number of different locations, as her father was a Squadron Leader in the Canadian Air Force. Her family eventually settled in Orillia, Ontario. Sandi attended the University of Toronto and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. During her time at U of T, she was a part of the University swim team. She kept the family entertained with her gracefully skilled diving routines during summer holidays.
She entered the field of teaching at Park Street Collegiate in Orillia and taught Home Economics and Physical Education. It was during her first year of teaching that she met the love of her life, Jim, who was teaching Physical Education at ODCVI in Orillia.
In 1969, the young couple and their three children ventured North and spent the next 29 years in the New Liskeard area. Sandi was always curious and up for a challenge. She continued to take courses while teaching and completed her Art Specialist and taught Art and was appointed head of the department at Timiskaming District Secondary School (NLSS).

Sandi led an active retirement in the Collingwood area where she was Past President of By The Bay Ladies Probus Club in Collingwood. She enjoyed: skiing, canoeing, biking, hiking, gardening, sewing and singing in a local choir. She was an avid reader and enjoyed the friendship of book club members and cherished playing bridge.

Sandi will be remembered for her strong will, generosity toward others, love of learning and of course that welcoming smile.

Family and friends will unite for a celebration of her life on June 18th, 2018 in New Liskeard. The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Sandu and the Oncology staff at the Owen Sound Hospital and Dr. Colleen Davies for her compassion and attention to their mother’s needs. They also acknowledge all the caregivers through the Community Care Partners and the Temiskaming Hospital for the exceptional care and respect they gave to Sandi in the last days of her life.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the the Bervely Boros Palliative Care Room at the Temiskaming Hospital or to the Temiskaming Art Gallery would be gratefully acknowledged. Condolences, contributions and memorial candles may be left at www.buffamleveille.com.
