Obituary for Missouri Frances "Sook" Colbourn

Missouri Frances "Sook" Colbourn
Missouri Frances Colbourn was born on January 16, 1932 to the late Edna Snead and Howard Walker in Melfa, Virginia. She was married to the late James Edward Colbourn in 1957; this union was blessed with one child, Gwendolyn Colbourn-Johnson.

Missouri received her education in the Accomack County school system and worked in the food processing industry for many years. She was a true caretaker with a loving heart and an infectious smile. This was displayed by her devotion in caring for numerous family members.

Missouri joined Gaskins Chapel A.M.E as a young adult and maintained her membership for over forty years. During this time, she served on the usher board until her health required her to relocate with her daughter. After her relocation, she longed to be here on the Shore with her life-long friends and extended family. Anyone that spent a minute with her would be left with a lasting memory of their encounter, be it a smile from her sense of humor, or a few tears from her ability to comfort you in your moment of pain.

Missouri was an avid listener of all spirituals, to put an emphasis on one would be doing an injustice to the others. If the focus was on the Lord, then it held a high place in her heart. Now that’s not to say the “Blues” didn’t get her feet tapping. We are all aware of Sook’s tendency to tell it straight, whether you wanted to hear it or not. Honestly that’s one reason that everyone loved her. Her advice had no filter, but was filled with so much truth.

Missouri leaves to celebrate her life: her daughter, Gwendolyn Colbourn-Johnson; acquired son, Sherman Boggs; three grandchildren, Byron Jerome Barnwell Jr. and spouse, Amy, James Tyrell Barnwell and spouse, Jennifer, and Javonne Barnwell; seven great-grandchildren, Brianna Worthy, Ahkaiya Barnwell, Josiah Barnwell, Leigha Barnwell, Jalesa Barnwell, and Asher Barnwell; one great, great-granddaughter, Milli’Anna Mills; special sons, Cleo Kelley Jr. and B.J. Barnwell, Sr.; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and a host of cousins and friends.
