Obituary for Mary Walpole Carey

Mary W. Carey, 91, of Lick St., Groton passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Sunday, February 11, 2018.

Born August 2, 1926 in Cortland, NY, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Cathaleen Comerford Walpole.

Having been a lifelong resident of Groton, she was a 1945 Graduate of Groton Central School followed by attending Powelson Business School in Syracuse.
She had worked as a secretary at the Groton Central School from 1946-1953 when she married D. James Carey. Her life was then dedicated to helping with the family farm and raising her family. She was a devoted communicant of St. Anthony Catholic Church and a member of the Alter and Rosary Society.

She is survived by her eight children, Daniel J. (Ann) Carey, Monica Carey, Kathleen (Steven) Howard, Mary (Lloyd) Cornell, Margaret (Mike) Wilson, Patricia Carey, Julie (Jason) Lilley Rita (Brian) Sheils and 20 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Her sisters-in-law, Margaret Murphy and Eleanor Carey and brother- in- law, Edward (Virginia) Carey and many nieces, nephews and cousins survive her as well.

Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her siblings, John T. Walpole, Mary Ann Walpole, Rita E. Walpole, and Cathleen R. Walpole

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with Fr. Daniel Puiz-Sierra as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon, 2-4:00 p.m. with a recitation of the Rosary being said at 3:30, at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams St., Groton.
