Trevor and I were lifelong friends. We met in the 1970s when we were both very young and working at our first real jobs, at the radio station which was then called Barbados Rediffusion. I can still remember Trevor’s first day at work, when the Chief Operator, Clyde Clarke, brought him in and introduced him as a trainee for the position of Technical Operator. Trevor was young and inexperienced and he looked it! He was a big, towering man, so he was head and shoulders above most of us, but he was quiet and a little shy. He was a very fast learner. It rapidly became clear that with his ability, and his totally endearing personality, this Trainee Technical Operator would soon secure a permanent place on the staff of the radio station. He worked tirelessly. He was creative, attentive and just plain competent. Trevor had the ability to multi-task at dizzying speeds, even in a busy and confusing environment. So whether he was working a shift that involved music, or interviews, call-in programs, news presentation, or outside broadcasts, he had the capacity to anticipate a problem and fix it, often before the listeners – or even the announcer – had a clue! Trevor’s skill for editing was legendary. Even in the days of the old reel-to-reel tapes, which today are considered primitive, Trevor Hollingsworth (or Holly as we all called him) could edit an ‘s’ off the end of a word, or remove the rustle of paper from a sentence as though it had never been there. He expected the same kind of focus and dedication from everyone who worked with him, even if we lacked his skill. And he was not afraid to let us know if he felt we were slacking! Trevor and I had great times working together in that old Rediffusion. It was extremely demanding and highly professional; and Trevor contributed hugely to the pride those young technical operators and radio announcers had in their work. After that, our lives took different directions, but we always enjoyed reminiscing about those early years. I was honored to work with Trevor Hollingsworth and to be his friend. Rest in peace, Holly.
