Cecilia Mary Vander Heiden, 94, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Plankinton, SD passed away Friday, February 16, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society - Luther Manor in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral Mass is 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Plankinton. A Committal Service will follow at Mizpah Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 3:00 – 5:00 P.M. Monday, February 19, 2018 with a 4:30 P.M. Rosary and 5:00 P.M. Wake Service.

Cecilia Mary (Kaus) Vander Heiden was born on February 4, 1924 to William and Nettie (Herman) Kaus in rural Stickney, SD. She attended Aurora County Country School in the area and was united in marriage to Bastiaan Richard Vander Heiden on May 2, 1945 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Plankinton, SD. From this union three children were born: Larry, Kathleen and Ronald. She took pride in being a farmer’s wife, raising her children, being a caretaker to her family and friends and also a restaurant cook.

Cecilia was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and active in the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She enjoyed creating beautiful things through her needlework.

Grateful for having shared in Cecilia’s life: her three children: Larry Vander Heiden (Lucy Waltz) of Otsego, MN, Kathleen (Sheldon) Gross of Sioux Falls, SD and Ronald (Holly) Vander Heiden of Crystal, MN; seven grandchildren: Lisa Ruden, Daniel Vander Heiden, Angela Goossen, Dara Bezug, Christine Adamavich, Tiffany Bender and Brittany Vander Heiden; 13 great grandchildren: Gabriel, Joshua Vander Heiden, Courtney Vander Heiden, Megan Vander Heiden, Alex Goossen, Shane Goossen, Jacob Bezug, Karlee Bezug, Dominic Bender, Julius Bender, Myles Adamavich, Matthias Adamavich and Marissa Adamavich; along with many nieces and nephews.

Cecilia was preceded in death by her husband, Bastiaan (Aug. 16, 1987); her parents, William and Nettie; six brothers: Alfred, Leonard, Mathias, George, Edward and Charles Kaus; six sisters: Dorothy Schroeder, Mary Tritle, Julia Schoenfelder, Elizabeth Koch, Helen Thompson and Rosalia Andera; and several in-laws.
