Obituary for Larry Eugene Singleton
Larry E. Singleton, 74, passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 in Arlington surrounded by his wife of 42 years, Mary Ann, and family who loved and supported him throughout his life and in his final hours.
Funeral: 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 24, at Wade Family Funeral Home, 4140 W. Pioneer Parkway, Arlington. Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday, February 23, at the funeral home.
Larry was born on July 27, 1943 in Gorman, Texas to Dale Lee Singleton and Bonnie Easter Moore Singleton. He grew up in west Texas and graduated from Odessa Permian High School in 1961. Larry proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and was a loyal supporter of the armed forces his entire life. He will be interned at the DFW National Cemetery later this year.
Larry met his wife Mary Ann in Washington D.C. at the wedding of his friend and Mary Ann’s brother, Tommy Armstrong. Little did he know he would soon be enfolded into the Armstrong family as one of their own. In addition to his own siblings and their growing families, Larry grew to love his new family-in-law and bonded with them all over the past 42 years. In good times and in times of struggle, all of his family was treated to his story telling, guitar playing, singing and extremely corny jokes.
Over the years his many nieces and nephews lovingly tolerated Uncle Larry’s corny jokes, magic coin tricks, tall tales and general silliness with affection. He loved greeting each new generation and treated them as a whole new audience to his antics. Many of them came to know him as “the rascal” and each eye roll at a terrible pun was always accompanied by a loving laugh because…that was just Uncle Larry.
And his daughters, Theresa and Melody have heard all the one-liners and can likely recite most of them for you. Each daughter connected with Larry in their own special way through music and learned from him a deep and abiding love of family.
Beyond his family, Larry was also admired as a loyal friend. He loved being surrounded by people who could swap stories or join in a session where they could “pick and grin” while playing music. His love of writing, performing and enjoying music was one of the many gifts he loved to share with those important in his life. There were few things in life he loved more than being able to share music with those he cared about, as evidenced in the songs he wrote and sang for his grandsons. If you haven’t heard the classic “Elmo is Hiding” you’re missing out.
All three of his grandsons had the opportunity to make many memories with their Pa. Larry loved spending time with them, especially while fishing; something he enjoyed a great deal throughout his life. It was the perfect venue to sit and tell stories and jokes and therefore the perfect venue for Pa.
Larry is remembered with love and survived by: Wife of 42 years, Mary Ann Singleton; daughters, Theresa Davis and Melody Riney and husband, Josh; mother, Bonnie Singleton; brothers, Gary Singleton and wife, Cynthia; sister, Deanna Knauer and husband, Greg; grandchildren, Matthew and Rex Davis and Michael Riney; numerous brothers and sisters-in- law; and nieces and nephews.
