Obituary for Ronald M. Brown

Ronald M. Brown
Ronald M. Brown, who enjoyed a long career in Newspaper Management with the Wyoming State Tribune and Wyoming Eagle, passed away on February 26, 2018 in Cheyenne Wyoming.

Ron was born on November 27, 1932 in Gering, Nebraska. It was here he developed his love for fishing, playing the trumpet, boy scouts, dance, and competitive swimming. In high school his family moved to Cheyenne where he joined the swim and track teams to make friends and fulfill his love of sports. He became a state record holder in swimming, earning a swimming scholarship to the University of Northern Colorado. After high school, he and several friends joined the Naval Reserves and eventually went active. He served in the US Navy for four years, still desiring to pursue his education.

After marrying the love of his life, Ella Mae, he started to work for Cheyenne Newspapers. He still longed to earn his college degree, so he pursued options for him to return. UNC still wanted an aspiring swimmer, so he was offered a scholarship upon his return. While there, he earned honors as a swimmer and graduated with honors earning his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business Management. Post college, he taught high school business for one year before returning to Cheyenne Newspapers accepting the role of Assistant Comptroller.

In 1970, Ron was promoted to Comptroller, earning a seat on the Board of Directors of the company. He became Vice President and Business Manager in 1981. During this time, he served as project manager for the building of the new production plant for Cheyenne Newspapers. Ron retired as VP of Business at Wyoming Tribune Eagle in 1993, yet continued to serve the newspaper as a VP, Director and Secretary of the company and consultant to management. In addition, he served as consultant to The Laramie Daily Boomerang, Laramie Newspapers, Inc., and The Northern Wyoming Daily News in Worland, WY.

In his life, Ron served as the Director and VP of the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce, Director and Chairman of the Industrial Development Association of Cheyenne, Director of the Wyoming Stockman Farmer, Inc., member and Board Chair of the YMCA, member and Director of the Cheyenne Rotary Club and The United Way, VP of Cheyenne Jaycees’ and President of Bain PTA. He was the recipient of the Jaycees’ Distinguished Service Award in 1967. Ron Loved the LORD with all of his heart leading him to a membership at the First Congregational Church and Meadowbrook Church in Cheyenne. Since 2004, Ron has been active in the Stroke Support Community.

Ron is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ella Mae; daughters, Rhonda Fossum (Clyde) of Atlanta, GA and Brenda Hamm (Mark) of Casper, WY; three grandchildren, Chris Fossum, Kaylee Brummond and Courtney Williamson; seven great grandchildren, David, Eden, Kiah, Miah, Arie and Eli Fossum, and Kaden Brummond; his brother, Wayne A.
