Obituary for Clay W. Shaw

Clay Walter Shaw, formerly of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, died on March 5 at Utz Terrace, Hanover, PA. He was the husband of the late Anna Heaps Shaw to whom he was married for 77 years.

Clay was born on June 18, 1917 in Hopewell Township, York County. He was the son of the late Russell C. and Ella Slade Shaw. Clay was preceded in death by two daughters, Jean Shaw McHale who was married to Michael McHale of Folly Beach, S.C. and Doris Shaw Bridges who was married to Donald Bridges of Shelby, N.C.

Clay is survived by his sons, Glenn Walter Shaw and wife Mary Sue Shaw of Stewartstown, and Dale Russell Shaw and wife Nancy Russell Shaw of Charlotte, N.C. He is also survived by grandchildren Barron Todd Shaw and wife Jana Shaw of Fawn Grove, PA; Anne Marie Shaw Patterson and husband Ben Patterson, of Waldorf, MD; Thomas McHale and wife Larissa McHale of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; Gregory McHale and wife Lesa McHale of Brooklyn, New York; Scott McHale and wife Lanie McHale, of Phoenix, MD; Elizabeth Shaw Avitabile and husband David Avitabile, of Arlington, VA; Robert Russell Shaw of Charlotte, N.C.; and Jonathan Bridges and wife Farah Bridges of Fort Lauderdale, FL. He is survived by thirteen great-grandchildren. Clay was preceded in death by a sister Roberta Shaw Trout, and survived by his sister Ruth Shaw Kulpon, of Stewartstown, PA.

Clay was a graduate of the University of Maryland. He served as an U. S. Army officer in both the European and Pacific Theaters during WWII, in the 86th Infantry Division, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. When he returned home he continued service in the Army reserves until he retired in 1965 with the rank of Lt. Colonel.

Clay was the owner and operator of Shaw Orchards for many years, and served on the advisory board of Knouse Fruit Co-Op. He was a member of Stewartstown Presbyterian Church where he served as a Ruling Elder and Sunday School Teacher. He was an active Mason. At the time of his passing he was the oldest surviving Worshipful Master in his lodge, having served for 76 years.

The couple enjoyed their retirement years, dividing their time between Stewartstown and Bradenton, Fl. They enjoyed travel to Australia, New Zealand, South America, England and much of Europe. They also traveled extensively throughout the United States.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 o’clock on March 12 at the Stewartstown Presbyterian Church, 14 College Ave., Stewartstown, PA. There will be a time for visitation one hour before the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Stewartstown Presbyterian Church in his memory. The family would like to thank the staff at Utz Terrace for their loving care for him for the past two years.
