Obituary for Margaret Jean Masson

Margaret Masson was born on October 27, 1937, in Onion Lake, SK. At the early age of six, Margaret was taken from her parents to go live at the R.C. Residential School and she remained there for six years. Mom's mention of those days that stood out for her were the long days of work. She also remembered that when she first got there the nuns cut her braid and that her ear got snipped as she was trying to protect her braid from being cut. As the years went on, her English became more fluent and she would be scolded at home for speaking English and scolded at school when she did not. Our mother never showed her children physical love but by taking care of us in the best way she knew how. She made sure we were always fed properly. She was a hard worker and kept our home organized and clean. Moms' favorite reply for us when we told her we loved her (kisakitin) was "I dunno". In Margaret's early life she grew up with no love and in return she could only express her love to us in humour "I dunno", but she loved her family dearly. For years mom would take her kids picking blueberries and saskatoons. We were taught to eat traditional foods as mom held on to her cultural ways. She attended feast ceremonies which she respected dearly. Margaret's hobbies included playing cards, stick games, and she made her own blankets. Mom accepted Jesus as her personal saviour in her twenties when Elwood McClean began his ministries at Onion Lake. She took the kids each year to the annual family camp meetings and like any mom she sure knew how to set up our camp as it was always amazingly organized. Mom taught us to be aware of all our aspects of life, culturally and christian. Margaret loved her sisters and always seemed to be protective of Dora, spoiled Nellie, and Stella was her friend.
She is predeceased by: her husband, Wilfred Masson; her parents, Morris Lewis and Maria Muskego; her children, Robert Lewis, Sharon Lewis, Margaret Ruthie, and Geoffery; her grandchildren, Charmaine Lewis, Della Lewis, and Keely Lewis; and her sibling, Lawrence Lewis.
Margaret is survived by: her children, Lorne Lewis (Geraldine), Arnold, Wanda, Celina, Eugene (Vanessa), Laura, and Milton; her siblings, Dora Cardinal, Nellie Lewis, Stella Lewis, Gordon Lewis, and Leonard Fox; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
