I have only worked with John for the last three years. One part of me is extremely grateful for our paths crossing and the other part of me is deeply saddened for not having John long enough. What I noticed about John was his innate ability to related to everyone on different levels. With me, it was love of the sport of ice hockey that we shared a connection. Professionally, John was often a calming voice, a voice of reason, a voice with a lot of weight in our circle at work. John never made anyone feel as if they were beneath him, although clearly John was a highly educated and experienced professional. He was quick and eager to share his experiences, both from his world travels but also his professional experiences. He told me once that he prided himself in mentoring new legal minds, which spoke volumes of John's value to work and his own value system. He always had time to chat, and when he disagreed he was always polite to hear you out and contemplate your supporting argument, and to then just as politely present his opinion and supporting reasoning. I will miss hearing his voice on the phone, greeting me with "Jimmy!" and I returning the gesture with "Johnny", and I will take a piece of what John taught me and try to be a better manager, person, friend, and neighbor.
