Obituary for Ben Earl James

Ben Earl James age 63, was born March 24, 1954 and was a son of the late Hazel and Clara James.

Ben attended Mayewood High School and served his country in the United States Marines.

Ben understood the value of work and was formerly employed with Carolina Fabrication Company, Campbell Soup, Shaw Lumber Company, and Bendix.

Ben had a friendly personality and disposition, which enabled him to get along well with others. He had a big heart and was willing to help those who needed his assistance. He had a unique sense of humor, always filling those around him with laughter and happiness.

He was formerly married to Betty Osborne of Rembert, SC

Ben was afforded the privilege of being nourished spiritually from a youth through his attendance at St. James Holiness Church. He counted it a blessing to hear the teaching and preaching of the Word of God.

In addition to his parents, Hazel and Clara James, Ben was preceded in death by seven brothers Hazel Jr., Leroy, Willie, Bernie, Robert Lee, Alexander, and James Wesley James; four sisters, Lizzie and Lurleen James (twins), Mary Louise James, and Paralee James Smith.

He departed this life on Monday, March 12, 2018 in Sumter, SC.

He leaves to cherish precious memories four sons, Rodney Earl (Shanel) James of Ocala, Florida, Ricardo Lorenzo (Patoshia) James, Rayshawn Bradley, and Marcus (Bridgette) Spann of Sumter, SC; one brother Joseph James of Sumter, SC; twelve grandchildren, Qwashon, Sheana, Tiffany, Terrance, De’avion, D’Mari, and Anaze James, Rayquan Colclough, and K’jhaun, Kirstyn and Ra’mir Bradley; brother-in-law, Gaylord Smith; three sisters-in law, Mary James, Lanell James, and Alvita James; several nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and special friends.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 16, 2018 at 11:00 AM from the St. James Holiness Church 3655 Myrtle Beach Hwy Sumter, SC with Pastor Alfreda Johnson, Officiating. Interment will follow in the Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC at 2:00 PM.

A public viewing will be held on Thursday, March 15, 2018 from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the mortuary.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Ricardo and Patoshia James 655 Brutsch Ave Sumter, SC.
