Obituary for Ronald K. Laubenstine
Ronald K. Laubenstine, 87, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2018.
Born May 18,1930, in Cressona, PA, he is the son of the late Norman and Alma (Kramer) Laubenstine.
Ronald was a 1947 graduate of the former Cressona High School.
In 1948 he joined the U.S. Navy. During his career he graduated from the former Fleet Sonar School in downtown Key West, FL, served as a sonar technician on the naval destroyers USS Massey (DD-778), the USS D.H. Fox (DD-779), and the USS O’Hare (DD-889), which included two tours of extended duty with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea Area. He also served two tours of shore duty as an instructor at the Sonar School where he was honorably discharged in 1957 with the rating of Sonar Technician 1st Class Petty Officer.
After leaving the Navy, he obtained a position with the Naval Inspection Service in Utica, NY testing and accepting electronic weapons systems being manufactured for the military. In 1963 he transferred to the former Fleet Material Support Office in Mechanicsburg working with the automated logistical systems. He retired from the federal government in 1985 as a Supervisory Supply System Analyst with more than 37 years of service in the Navy Department.
As an evening student, he attended the former Utica College of Syracuse University in Utica, NY, graduated from Harrisburg Area Community College (1973) with an Associates Degree, and graduated from Penn State University, Capital Campus (1976) with a BBA degree.
In 1967 he founded and organized Cub Scout Pack 285 and Boy Scout Troop 285 in East Pennsboro Township. During his Scoutmaster years, the Troop’s first two Eagle Scouts and first eight Order of the Arrow Members were produced. He was a life member and former President, Treasurer, and fireman for Creekside Volunteer Fire Company in the Township, as well as a member of the volunteer crew that constructed the fire house and social hall. He was a life member of VFW Post 6704 in Mechanicsburg a member and former officer of AFGE Local 1156 at the Navy Depot, a life member of Penn State Alumni Association, a life-long Lutheran and current member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Camp Hill.
Ronald is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gladys (Stoudt) Laubenstine, of Mechanicsburg, a son David and wife Kathi, of Mechanicsburg; grandchildren Lyndsey Hornock and Fiancé Sean, and Jonathon Hornock and wife Molly; and great grandchildren Bishop and Leighton. In addition are his brothers Oliver Laubenstine of Cressona, and Noel of Orwigsburg, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers Henry, Richard, and Kenneth, as well as his son Jeffrey Alan.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, May 3, 2018, in the Myers-Harner Funeral Home, 1903 Market Street, Camp Hill, PA, with Rev. John Brock officiating. A viewing will be held in the funeral home on Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service. Burial with Military honors will follow the service at Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill.
