Obituary for Thomas Aaron Duncan
Thomas Aaron Duncan passed from this life on Monday, May 7, 2018, at his home in Stillwater. His memorial service will be held Saturday, May 12, at 2 p.m. at the Stillwater Church of Christ, Duck at McElroy, with Jimie-Wray Mead officiating. Friday evening, May 11, there will be a family visitation period at Strode Funeral Home, 7-8:30 p.m.
Thomas Aaron was born on July 7, 1920, in Franklin County, TN, the youngest of three sons born to Robert Harvey Duncan and Ora Florence Scivally Duncan. He grew up on the farm and graduated from high school in 1938. In 1939 he came to Stillwater to attend Oklahoma A and M College (OAMC). In the late spring of 1942, during World War II, he volunteered for the Navy. He served most of his tenure in the South Pacific islands all the way from New Caledonia to the southern Philippines. He was discharged as a Petty Officer, First Class, in December, 1945, and returned to OAMC for the spring semester 1946. He finished his degree in accounting, graduating and getting married to Sylvia Hodges the same day, May 31, 1948.
He began his career as a public accountant in his brother’s firm, G. Wilson Duncan Company, in Stillwater, serving clients until his retirement 2005, at age 85. He was an active member of the Stillwater Church of Christ, as a deacon for many years in building project leadership and outreach to international students. He owned and maintained rental properties, including two mobile home parks. His avocation, especially after retirement, was his farm on Brush Creek Road, from which the bountiful vegetable crops were distributed throughout the community.
Thomas Aaron was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers, G. Wilson Duncan and James H. Duncan. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, of the home; daughter Andrea Duncan; son Dan Duncan and his wife, Kaye, all of Stillwater. In addition: two grandsons, Robert Duncan and wife, Mica, of Edmond and David Duncan, Tulsa; and three great-grandchildren, Max, Adlee, and Ramey, all of Edmond. He is also survived by niece, Pat Duncan Akers, of Stillwater; nephew, James Robert Duncan, Winchester, TN; great-niece, Karen Myers, and two great-nephews, Chris Akers and Kent Akers.
