Obituary for Leslye Hess Herrmann

Leslye Hess Herrmann
Leslye Gail Hess Herrmann, 79, of Lemoyne passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born December 14, 1938 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, to Worrall Lester Hess and Mary Jane (Ash) Hess. She married Dwight Leo Herrmann February 24, 1962 in Tomah, Wisconsin.
She graduated from Tomah High School in 1956. She attended Wisconsin State College of Milwaukee.
Throughout her life Leslye was a tireless advocate for women, families, and people with disabilities. She was active with the League of Women Voters in Pennsylvania, holding several positions, including Director for Social Policy Issues and Coordinator of the Family and Medical Leave Coalition. She was appointed to several commissions and task forces by both Governors Thornburgh and Casey from 1986 to 1995. She testified before the Pennsylvania House and Senate on several occasions, and before the U.S. Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board in Washington. In 1995 she was presented with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Award by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, “for public service with love and understanding”. In 2000, Leslye was the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Congress for Pennsylvania District 17.
Leslye will be remembered for her ready laugh, strong opinions, fierce pride in her four daughters and seven grandchildren, and her undying loyalty to the Green Bay Packers. She and Dwight shared a love of birding, gardening and a good Manhattan. Always ready to put on a party, her last sentence was “Dwight, get the clams.”
Leslye is survived by husband Dwight, of Lemoyne; her brother Worrall L. “Brad” (Judy) Hess of Sinking Springs, PA, her sister Bonnie Dana and husband Robert of Tomah; daughters Leslye Herrmann (David Binion) of Pittsburgh, PA, Elizabeth Herrmann (Jacob Tropp) of Bristol, VT, Jane Herrmann (Andrew Latimer) of Davis, CA, and Susannah Herrmann (Ketil Freeman) of Seattle, WA; and her grandchildren Stefan Binion, Aleksander Binion, Rosa Tropp, Samuel Tropp, Leo Latimer, Susannah Latimer, and Iris Freeman.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday June 2, 2018 in the Myers-Harner Funeral Home, 1903 Market St., Camp Hill, PA, with Rev. Alan Echard officiating. A visitation will be held in the funeral home on Saturday from 1:00 P.M. until the time of the service. Burial will be private and handled at the convenience of the family.
