Obituary for Charles John "Charlie" Hoekstra

Charles John "Charlie"  Hoekstra
Charles John Hoekstra, 33, of Battle Creek, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2018. He was born September 5, 1984 in Battle Creek, the son of Charles and Jean (Hasier) Hoekstra. Charlie graduated from Marshall High School class of 2003. He received his Bachelor in Psychology, minoring in journalism, at WMU. While attending WMU, Charlie worked in their library. He married Angelica Frias on July 19, 2012. He loved to read, write, and play music. Charlie was very gifted and creative when it came to his writing and playing the drums. He was a deep thinker and loved to go for walks in the woods; communing with nature. There was a sarcasm and whit about Charlie that would just make you smile and feel comfortable. He was a loyal friend and could carry on a conversation with anyone. Charlie had a deep love for his children and his wife. His greatest joy was his family. He was a man with a good heart with a kind and gentle soul.
He is survived by his wife, Angelica Hoekstra; children, Anthony Enriquez and Luna Hoekstra; parents, Charles (Jean) Hoekstra; sister, Julia (Charles) Swafford; mother-in-law, Anna Escalante; brothers-in-law, Anselmo, Jr. and Nabor Frias; sisters-in-law, Veronica (Angel) Espinoza and Virginia Frias; grandmother, Teresa Escalante; and many loving aunts, uncle, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Arthur Hoekstra; paternal grandmother, Kathryn Hoekstra-Nugent; and his maternal grandparents, John & Gloria Hasier.
Visitation will be held Monday from 2:00-4:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM at St. Jerome Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Christopher Ankley officiating.
