Raymond L. Gover, 90, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Friday, October 5, 2018 at the UPMC Pinnacle -West Shore Hospital, Mechanicsburg.
Born on December 5, 1927 in Somerset, KY, he was the son of the late Raymond B. and Leslie F. Gover.
Ray was a 1946 graduate of Western High School in Detroit and went on to complete his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan. He was also awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane letters Degree from Shippensburg University. Ray served in the US Army and was a member of the West Point Band. He was a retired publisher and past president of The Patriot News. Prior to his appointment at The Patriot News in 1981, he was the Editor and Publisher of the Saginaw News and Editor of the Flint Journal in Michigan.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frieda J. McGill, of Mechanicsburg; a son, Mark H. Gover (Robin), of Saginaw, MI; two daughters, Janine M. Park, of Camp Hill, and Janet L. Gover, of Kalamazoo, MI; a daughter-in-law, Juli S. Gover-Smith, of Camp Hill; one granddaughter, Hilary L. Hunt (Wade), of York Springs; two grandsons, John F. Gover (Colleen), of Stamford, CT, and Andrew R. Gover, of Charlotte, NC, and two great-grandchildren; Audrey and Ethan, both of York Springs; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Matthew, a Harrisburg attorney who died in November 2012, and a brother, John C. Gover (Rose), who died in 2017.
A celebration of Ray’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at the Pine Street Presbyterian Church, 310 N 3rd St, Harrisburg, with the Rev. Dr. Russell C. Sullivan, Jr., Pastor, officiating. Parking will be available in the South Street Parking Garage. Friends and family are invited to gather for a reception following the service at the West Shore Country Club in Camp Hill. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in St. John’s Cemetery, Mechanicsburg. Myers-Harner Funeral & Cremation Services, Camp Hill, has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
