Obituary for Rex Walsh

Rex Walsh, 92, of Olathe, KS passed peacefully on Oct. 5, 2018 at The University of Kansas Medical Center. He was preceded in death nine months ago by his wife of 73 years, Barbara, the love of his life. Visitation 3:00 to 5:00 Sun., Oct. 14, 2018 at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913) 856-7111. Graveside service 2:30 pm Mon., Oct. 15, 2018 at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS with military honors. Rex was born Dec. 7, 1925 in Oakland, IL to Charles and Ola (Burdette) Walsh. He graduated from Oakland High School in 1943 and married Barbara Bitner on Sept. 16, 1944. Rex honorably served in the US Army during WW II until 1946. Rex and his family lived and worked in Oakland until they moved to Charleston, IL and then Flora, IL in 1963 where he was the owner/operator of the Flora Grain Elevator for 33 years. Rex and Barbara moved to Olathe, KS after his retirement in 1992. He was a lifetime member of the Oakland, IL Masonic Lodge #219, the VFW Post #3637 and the American Legion of Oakland, IL. He also served on the Board of Education in Flora, IL and was Past-President of the Kiwanis Club of Flora. He was a member of the Earl Collier American Legion Post #153, Olathe, KS. Rex had an outgoing personality and never met a stranger. He enjoyed working in his yard and his flower and vegetable gardens. He will be dearly missed by family, friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara and eight siblings. Rex is survived by daughters: Lynn (Stephen) Wilfong, Estero, FL and Collinsville, IL, Jeanne Walsh, Olathe, KS and Laurie (Rick) Emerson, Olathe, KS; grandchildren: Steve Wilfong and Lynsie Wilfong, Collinsville, IL; Stefanie Wilfong, Estero, FL and Jordan Emerson, Olathe, KS; two sisters: Linda Gallatin, Indianapolis, IN, Jane Carter, Salem, OR; step-brother, Kenneth Ellis, Hume, IL; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
