To all of Shirley's family members and friends, I send my condolences. What a shock it was to learn the she had passed away. She was a remarkable person who left imprints that will long remain on those she came in contact with. I am very worry for your great loss. And now, to Shirley: Shirley, I am so very sorry that I did not have a chance to say goodbye to you. However, that sentiment is tempered by the knowledge that you did not suffer when you died. You passed away as most of us would probably choose--suddenly and with no pain. For that, I am very thankful. Over nearly the past year, I have struggled with how to express my feelings over your death, but I never found the right words. But it's necessary to try. What can I say about a close friendship that lasted 75 years? It started in the 3rd or 4th grade and continued right up until you left us. We were pals in the band and orchestra in junior and senior high school and even managed to play a duet together on flute and French horn! But that was not all. We could and did discuss all sorts of things, from religion to politics to music to philosophy to who knows what. I don't recall that we ever had an argument, although we did disagree about some things--but always respectfully of the other's viewpoint. You were there for me when I was discouraged or had a problem, being an excellent listener and always offering support. I've always admired your activism in human rights, your compassion for other people and animals, and your activities in a host of other worthwhile causes. I could go on and on but never cover all of your attributes, so I will close by saying that I miss you very much and will always be grateful to have been your friend. Rest well, dear friend, for you have certainly earned it! Love, Jean

Shirley was one of a kind. I miss her. There's no one to replace her. Shirley always said if she won the lotto, then she would give the money to The SPLC/Southern Poverty Law Center. Donations made in Shirley Bartlett's name would make Shirley happy.

Yvonne, Thanks so very much for sharing with us the sad news of your mother's passing. Shirley was a good friend of ours for many years at The Unitarian Society of New Brunswick. Dan, as Director of Music there, has many lovely memories of practicing and performing music with Shirley. She played the flute like an angel! And she had a charming and caring personality. We've kept up with her all these years through emails and Christmas letters, and she's been to NJ to visit a few times. We will hold her memory in our hearts. Please give our condolences to your siblings. We still remember your brother's magic tricks at the Unitarian Cabaret!

Grams, I miss you. I miss your annual call wishing me a happy birthday. I miss visiting you in the summer. I miss the way you made me feel loved. Although I never knew my biological grandparents, I know a grandmothers love. You made me feel like family from the moment I confided in you my intentions to marry your granddaughter. You will forever live in my heart and my mind. I love you.
