Linda Ann Adkins Isenhour passed away October 16, 2018 in Olathe, Kansas after an illness. Linda approached her illness with the same spirit and positive attitude with which she lived her life, she made the most of every day and enjoyed her friends and family. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday, November 2, 2018 in the Worship and Life Center at Cedar Lake Village, 15329 S. Lone Elm Road, Olathe, KS 66061. A memorial service and inurnment will be held at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Hickory, NC on a future date. Arrangements: Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913) 856-7111. Linda was born October 26, 1937 to Roger and Gertrude (Smith) Adkins in Hickory, North Carolina. She graduated from Claremont Central High School, also known as the Hickory High School, in 1955 and received her Bachelors in Education from Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1959. While in high school and college, Linda played the coronet in the marching band. Linda worked for four summers as a counselor at Lutheridge Summer Camp in Arden, North Carolina. As a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Hickory, North Carolina she was very active in youth activities along with her brother John. Linda was an elementary school teacher for the Catawba County Schools, Durham Public Schools, and Ithaca City School District.
On June 11, 1960 Linda was united in marriage to Thomas Lee Isenhour. This union produced two wonderful children, daughter Anastasia and son Joseph Bradley. She was deeply involved in her children’s activities; volunteering at Estes Hills Elementary School as a full-time and part-time aide and as a crisis aide and serving as a Girl Scout troop leader. Linda and Tom enjoyed traveling and lived in many interesting places, Ithaca, New York; Seattle, Washington; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Jerusalem, Israel; Silver Spring, Maryland; and Logan, Utah. Linda strived to give back to all of her communities through her volunteer work. While in Utah Linda attended Utah State University and updated her teaching degree adding a media endorsement which allowed her to work in libraries. She worked as an aide in the Edith Bowen Laboratory School and in the Merrill Library at Utah State University.
The ability to work in libraries opened many new opportunities for Linda. After she and Tom separated, Linda moved back to Chapel Hill and worked for a short time in the Perkins Library at Duke University, followed by many terrific years at the Chapel Hill Public Library. Linda also resumed her volunteer work with the Girl Scouts enjoying even more adventures.
Linda moved to Kansas in 2013 to be closer to her family especially her grandson Keegan. She made Cedar Lake Village her home where she volunteered in the library preparing books for circulation. Linda and her Cedar Lake friends played bridge and bingo regularly. She was a member of the Drama Club, “Act your Age,” performing in several plays and having the lead role in “Baby Snooks.” Throughout her life Linda was a dedicated educator, an avid reader, and a Tar Heel sports fan.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Roger and Gertrude Adkins. Linda will be deeply missed and remembered by her daughter Anna Fischer and husband Brad and grandson Keegan Fischer, Olathe, Kansas; son, Brad Isenhour and wife Jenny, Murray, Utah; brother, John Adkins and wife Noelle, Chapel Hill, North Carolina; as well as other extended family and countless wonderful friends from her many life adventures.
