John Durham Armstrong, 80, of Kure Beach, NC, passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. He was born May 20, 1938 in Chicago, IL, son of the late Albert Nicholas and Azelda Durham Armstrong.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

John was a graduate of Belmont, MA H.S. and Boston College where he earned a BSBA in Finance. He served in the Massachusetts Air National Guard and was part of a military deployment of Guardsmen and Reservists over to Germany, ordered into active duty by President Kennedy, due to the escalation of the Berlin Crisis in 1961. He worked for over 25 years at the Pacific Stock Exchange in San Francisco, CA. His interests included astronomy, which continued throughout his life as he followed scientific discoveries and advancements. As an avid Red Sox fan, he enjoyed the game of baseball and later in life became President of Lafayette, CA Little League of which his son was a player. John and his wife retired to the coast of North Carolina where he could be found frequently at the beach marveling at the power and majesty of the ocean. John always had a love for animals and would find inherent beauty in all of nature.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Susan Farr Armstrong; his beloved dog Janie; daughter, Sarah Armstrong of Clover, SC; son, Andrew Armstrong, and wife, Daphne McQuaig Armstrong and grandchildren, Aidan Armstrong & Taylor Armstrong, all of Rock Hill, SC.

Services will be held at a later date.
