Obituary for Leslie R. ""Les"" Barber
Leslie R. Barber, 68, of Groton, NY passed away October 16, 2018 at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, NY.
He was born March 28, 1950 in DeRuyter, NY to the late Philip and Edna Hughes Barber.
He graduated from DeRuyter Central School and married Donna Washbon moving to Groton in 1977.
He worked at Smith Corona for 28 years, Durkees Bakery in Cortland and Cargill Salt Mines in Lansing, NY for 18 years, retiring in 2016.
Les’s favorite pastime activities included riding motorcycles and snowmobiles, belonging to the Finger Lakes Trail Runners, Inc., target shooting, helping out friends and family with any and all their needs. He was handy at carpentry work, having remodeled their house and also building the garage in 1986. Nothing rattled Les, he always had a smile and was patient and kind.
Surviving him is his wife of 41 years, Donna at home; his sisters, Elaine (Lloyd) Foster of Georgetown and Lois (Mike) Holmes of Pitcher; a brother, Mark (Tammy) of Middletown, NY; an uncle, Robert F. (Tiny) Hughes of Homer and an aunt, Eleanor (LaVerna) Enders of Norwich. Also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by a sister, DeAnne, a brother, Michael and a great-nephew, Walker White.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 28th, 4:00 p.m. at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams St., Groton. Friends may call on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to a charity of one’s choice.
