Greta Jane Sardo passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 90 on Saturday, November 10 at The Solana Doylestown.
The eldest child of Elmer and Enola (Unger) Saylor, Greta was born on December 30, 1927 and raised in Allentown, PA.
She met her future husband, Pete Sardo, at what was then Kutztown State Teachers College. After they married in 1950 Greta and Pete moved to Emmaus, PA where they raised their two sons Douglas and Duane. Greta spent most of her professional life as a first grade teacher in the East Penn Union School District. For 34 years she took great pleasure in teaching the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic to the youngest elementary school students.
Upon retiring in 1984 Greta moved with her husband to Laureldale, Pennsylvania. There she became active in the Rosedale United Church of Christ where she enjoyed singing in the choir and playing in the bell choir. She also assisted Pete in cooking Church suppers and making apple dumplings as fundraising for the Church. After her husband’s death in 1993 Greta focused her energy on volunteering at the Leader Nursing Home and in 1995 was acknowledged as volunteer of the month by the Reading Eagle Newspaper. She also continued to maintain, with her son Douglas, the antique market at Adamstown as she and Pete had done for many years.
In the mid 1990’s Greta discovered the delights of traveling with her son Douglas and his spouse Gilbert. From the Galápagos Islands to the headwaters of the Amazon River in Peru, prehistoric painted caves in France to zip lining in the rain forest of Costa Rica, exploring Thailand, Laos and Burma, camping in the Sahara Desert to touring above the Arctic Circle in Finland or cruising between the Tahitian Islands, Greta, Doug and Gil made a dedicated traveling team. When asked where she like traveling the most Greta always answered the four times they went on game safaris in Kenya, Tanzania, and Botswana Africa.
In 2007 Greta moved from her beloved home in Laureldale to an independent living apartment at The Pine Run Community in Doylestown. There she sang in the Pine Run Chorus and also the choir of the Salem United Church of Christ in Doylestown.
Greta is predeceased by her husband of 43 years Peter and her younger son Duane.
She is survived by her son Douglas and his spouse Gilbert Wechsler of Upper Black Eddy, PA; her brothers David and Donald and sisters Patricia Heckman and Carol Lempke all of Allentown.
Greta will be remembered for her kind blue eyes, her selfless, gentle disposition and the grace and strength with which she moved through her well lived life. She will be missed by all who knew her.
