J. Allen Myer, 77, of Elizabethtown, PA, passed away on Saturday morning, November 17, 2018 at Hershey Medical Center. Born in Manheim Twp, Lancaster Co., he was the son of the late Samuel N. and Sara H. Jackson Myer. He was the husband of Arlene J. Berrier Myer for 56 years on April 14.
Allen was a 1958 graduate of Elizabethtown High School and he attended Christ Church United Church of Christ. Prior to retiring, he was employed as a mason by the former Lester P. Eshelman Masonry in Lancaster for 35 years.
A great outdoorsman, Allen enjoyed fishing, hunting, and helping the local blue bird population to recover by building, installing, and maintaining bluebird boxes. He was a member of Yellow Breeches Anglers Association, NRA, and a life member of Milton Grove Sportsmen’s Club. Allen also owned beagles since childhood and was a member of Elizabethtown Beagle Club where he enjoyed spending time with the guys and helping to maintain the club property.
He also enjoyed working with wood and built the home where his family was raised. Allen was a sports fan, especially the Phillies, enjoyed making homemade ice cream, and, most of all, enjoyed spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Patricia L, wife of Michael E. Irvin, Kay E., wife of Jamey J. Leber, and Gregory A., husband of Bobbi S. Myer, all of Elizabethtown; seven grandchildren; two great grandsons; and four siblings, Warren J. (Cindy) Myer, of Lebanon, Kenneth D. Myer (Sally Nolt), of Elizabethtown, Sara A. (Randy) Rissinger, of Mount Joy, and Barbara A. (David) Dean, of Elkton, MD.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday morning, November 27, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Christ Church United Church of Christ, 247 South Market Street, Elizabethtown, PA. Interment will follow in Milton Grove Cemetery. The family will receive guests at a viewing at the church on Monday evening, November 26 from 6-8:00 PM and on Tuesday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
