Life Story for Amber S. McCabe

Monmouth – Amber S. McCabe, 87, a resident of Monmouth, passed away peacefully, early Monday morning, December 24th at her home. She was born April 29, 1931 in East Monmouth, the daughter of G. Clinton Smith and Dorothy (Frost) Smith. She attended East Monmouth One Room Schoolhouse, was a graduate of Melrose High School in Massachusetts, attended Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts and also attended Gorham State Teachers College. On November 1, 1952 in Greene she married her husband John F.C. McCabe, Sr. They enjoyed 43 years together before his passing on December 14, 1995. Amber was devoted to her family and her home, and took great pride in caring for her family and working on their farm. She was a member of the East Monmouth United Methodist Church and the Church Auxiliary, and the Monmouth Lions Club. She enjoyed volunteering at the Monmouth Food Bank, knitting prayer shawls and mittens, cooking for church suppers and was known for her great pickles and relish. She is survived by her sons, Stephen McCabe, Sr. and wife Edie of Shirley, Joel McCabe and wife Barbara, Colin McCabe and John F.C. McCabe, Jr. and wife Iona, daughters, Marguerite McCabe and fiancé Thomas Haefele and Kathleen Heath and husband Timothy all of Monmouth, brothers, Ralph C. Smith and wife Dorothy of Kittery, and Kenneth Smith and wife Rita of Greene, sisters Constance Buckley of Leeds and Frances McCabe of Auburn, 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, sisters-in-laws, Geraldine MacCabe and Hedwig MacCabe, brother-in-law, Lloyd McCabe, her aunts, Ruth Travers and Nellie Mae Rolfe, her uncle, Wilbur Smith and her dear friend, Donna Frost, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and her granddog “Rosie. She was predeceased by her parents her husband, brothers, Roger, Robert, Raymond, Roland, Fred, and Milton Smith, sister, Alberta Tapley and several brothers-in-laws, and dear friend Ken Frost.
