Ithaca – Eleanor Carey died on Wednesday, December 26, 2018,in Ithaca, NY.
Eleanor was born in Groton NY on April 9, 1930. She was the daughter of the late Daniel and Marguerite (Hatch) Carey.
Eleanor grew up in Groton, NY, and graduated from Groton High School in 1948. She received her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics from the College of Human Ecology, Cornell University in 1952. This was followed by a dietetic internship at Massachusetts General in Boston in 1953. Later, Eleanor went back to school at the University of Missouri, graduating with a Master’s degree in Nutrition and Dietetics.
Eleanor’s professional career began at Tompkins County Hospital in Ithaca (now Cayuga Medical Center) as Director of the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition. She then moved to Albany and worked for the New York State Department of Health as Supervising Public Health Nutritionist until her retirement. After retiring, Eleanor ran her bed and breakfast, the Blue Willow, in Trumansburg, NY. In 2004, Eleanor moved to Ithaca and continued to stay involved in her community by volunteering with Foodnet Meals on Wheels, Human Ecology Alumni Association (Cornell University) and St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Ithaca. She has been Executive Director at Tompkins County FISH (Friends in Service Helping) for 14 years.
Eleanor was involved throughout her career in the Dietetics Association (now known as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) as district president, NYS president, and NYSdelegate to the national association. She worked with Public Health nurses to create the first homebound meals delivery program in Tompkins County. She then moved to Albany and worked for the NYS Department of Health until her retirement. Medicare was created in 1965 and Eleanor was part of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of physicians, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, physical therapists/occupational therapists, and architects that wrote the standards that became Article 28 of Public Health Law. Eleanor’s responsibilities included supervision of public health nutritionists, and in later years, assisting with set-up of perinatal and prenatal units providing care for high risk mothers and babies.
She enjoyed travelling, spending time with her family, and adored her pets, Laddie and Lucy.
She was predeceased by her friend, Russ Palombi; her brothers, James and his wife Mary Walpole Carey, and Francis Carey; and her sisters, Jean Carey Taylor, husband George, and their daughter Kathleen Taylor; and Margaret Carey Murphy and her husband, Henry.
Eleanor is survived by her brother, Edward Carey (Virginia) of Little Rock, AR; her nephew, Dan Carey; her nieces, Monica Carey, Kathleen Howard, Mary Cornell, Margaret Wilson, Patricia Carey, Julie Lilley, Rita Sheils, Lisa Carey, Cecelia McKay, Mari Logan; their husbands; grandnieces and grandnephews; and friends; Molly and Daniel Bresnahan and family of TX; and Mary Mulvanerton of Ithaca, NY.
Eleanor’s family extends their appreciation to Dr Bael and his staff, and the care teams at Hospicare of Ithaca for their kind and compassionate service.
