Obituary for Roland "Ron" Orr

Roland (Ron) Charles Orr was born May 2,1945 to Bud and Eileen (Ovesen) Orr at Dakota Hospital, Vermillion, SD. Ron died peacefully at his home in Vermillion, SD on January 24, 2019.

Ron moved to the Bluff Road with his family in 1947. He attended Spring Hill Country School until the 7th grade and graduated from Wakonda High School in May 1963. He married Beverly (Bev) Nissen on January 8,1966 and they had two children, Steph and Jim.

Ron was a lifelong farmer working with his father, brother, and son. He especially loved working with the cows and calves. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and attending sporting events, but most of all spending time with his family and friends.

Ron was a member of the Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, the Wakonda Legion, and the South Dakota National Guard. He also served several years on the Wakonda School Board and the Pleasant Valley Church Council.

Ron is preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Eileen Orr, two daughters, in infancy, Shelley and Debra, his in-laws, Robert and Jean Nissen, two nephews David and Erick Harris and step-mother Alice Orr.

Ron is survived by his wife, Bev, of 53 years, his two children Steph Berry and Jim (Jenny) Orr and two grandchildren, Kelcy Orr and Colin Berry, his brother Frank (Gwen) Orr and his sisters, Sally (Ralph) Westergaard and Mary (Todd) Brevik, sister in-law, Dianne (Bob) Harris and brother in-law Dick (Kathy) Nissen and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Pallbearers are Matt Westergaard, Mark Westergaard, Justin Orr, Chris Brevik, Jeff Brevik, Todd Harris, and Chris Nissen. Honorary Pallbearers are Beth Millage, Sue Tausch, Jean Hansen, Brenda Townsend, Melissa Orr-Beverly, Alison Witte, Karen Nissen-Boryczka, and Shelly Haiar.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to Pleasant Valley Cemetery Association or to the Avera Home Hospice -Yankton.

The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to all the medical doctors, the hospice staff and family and friends for their love and support.
