Obituary for John Marshall Jobe
John Marshall Jobe passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2019. A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on February 8, 2019 at the First Christian Church in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of the arrangements.
He grew up in Ponca City and graduated from Ponca City High School in 1951. He was selected as an All-State basketball player and attended Boys State.
Following high school, John attended Tulsa University on a four-year basketball scholarship and graduated from TU in 1955 with a BS in mathematics. There he met Caryl Albin. They were married in August 1954. Together they had six children and were married for almost 65 years.
After graduating from TU, John taught math and coached baseball/basketball at Ponca City High School for 7 years. In 1962, the family moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma where he began graduate studies in mathematics at Oklahoma State University. He graduated in 1966 with a PhD in math. He was hired by OSU as a math professor that same year, earning full professorship in 1979.
In 1977, he directed and hosted a 45-minute film/video titled, “Henry P. Iba”. It is in the Oklahoma Basketball Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was a member of the OSU Athletic Council for two periods of time in the 1970’s and 1980’s. John served on the OSU Faculty Council and was very active in the OSU Mathematics Graduate Program. John innovated teaching by utilizing video tape (OSU’s Education Television Systems: ETS) to visually demonstrate how to work through math problems, equations, and theories. He retired from OSU in 1994.
During his retirement he wrote over 1,000 brief stories in rhyme. Eleven books were self-published, each of which contained about 50 of his poems. John was known as “The Old Timer” and performed songs and rhymes throughout Arkansas, Colorado, and Oklahoma.
In Stillwater, he coached numerous little league basketball and baseball teams. He was a member of the First Christian Church and was a volunteer at Our Daily Bread. He was a member of the Stillwater Antique Classic Car Club through which he enjoyed showing off his 1930 Ford Model A Roadster and 1930 Ford Phaeton. His greatest pastime love was spending time at their cabin in Pitkin, Colorado. Numerous summers were spent with family and friends hiking, jeeping, fishing, and sitting by the fire.
He is survived by wife, Caryl; children, Marcus Jobe, Jody Jobe (Carol Merlo), Amy Nelson, Jenny Farrar (Troy) and Hutch Jobe (Trish); grandchildren Rob, Jake, Rachael, Hutch, Zach, Levi, Sam, Austin, Shiloh, and Trace; great grandchildren, DJ, Piper, Pierce, Preston, Davis, Hazel, Jewel, Addison and Sylvia.
John was dearly loved by all family and friends and will be greatly missed.
