After graduating from TU, John taught math and coached baseball/basketball at Ponca City High School for 7 years. He retired from OSU in 1994.
During his retirement he wrote over 1,000 brief stories in rhyme. Eleven books were self-published, each of which contained about 50 of his poems. John was known as “The Old Timer” and performed songs and rhymes throughout Arkansas, Colorado, and Oklahoma.

He was a member of the Stillwater Antique Classic Car Club through which he enjoyed showing off his 1930 Ford Model A Roadster and 1930 Ford Phaeton. His greatest pastime love was spending time at their cabin in Pitkin, Colorado. Numerous summers were spent with family and friends hiking, jeeping, fishing, and sitting by the fire.
