1930-2010

Agawam-Joan P. (Johnson) Briggs, 79, of Agawam died Monday morning February 1, 2010 in Baystate Medical Center, Springfield. Joan, a daughter of the late Henry and Irene (LeFleur) Johnson was born in Springfield on August 30, 1930. Raised in Springfield she graduated from Springfield Technical High School. She received her L.P.N. degree from Springfield Trade High School and her R.N. degree from Springfield Technical Community College. Joan worked for many years as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital and retired in 1986. She has resided in Agawam for the past five years, and in Springfield most of her life, and was a member of Bethesda Evangelical Lutheran Church. In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her husband of 39 years Richard E. Briggs and her sister, Norma Wills. She is survived by three sons, Ronald J. Briggs and his wife Karen of Longmeadow, David R. Briggs of Pittsfield, and Kevin E. Briggs and his wife Ann Marie of Springfield; her daughter-in-law, Jill Cochrane Briggs of Agawam; a brother, Harold Johnson and his wife Agnes of Port St. Lucie, FL; seven grandchildren, Michael, James, Colin, Carly, and Patrick Briggs, Jason and Robert Chew. Joan will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Visiting hours for Joan will be held on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres Funeral Home, 21 Tinkham Road, Springfield. A funeral home service for Joan will be held on Thursday morning February 4, 2010 at 11 a.m. followed by the Rites of Committal and Burial in Hillcrest Park Cemetery, 895 Parker Street, Springfield. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Joan’s memory may be made to Bethesda Evangelical Lutheran Church, 455 Island Pond Road, Springfield, MA.
