Elizabeth J. 'Betty' (Tupper) Smith, 76, of East Hartford, loving wife of Richard F. Smith, Sr., went to be with our Lord on Saturday, (April 25, 2009) surrounded by her caring family. Born in Fort Covington, NY on August 13, 1932, a daughter of the late James B. and Helen E. (Meagan) Tupper, she had resided in East Hartford for over sixty-five years. Prior to her retirement, Betty was a nurse for over nineteen years for the American Red Cross and prior to that she was employed for many years by Hartford Hospital. Betty was a faithful long-time communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, East Hartford, but most of all she was a proud mother and grandmother. She also enjoyed being a member of the 'Thursday Lunch Club'. Besides her parents, Betty was predeceased by a sister, Patricia Hollister of South Windsor. Along with her beloved husband, Richard, of fifty-seven years, Betty is survived by four sons, Richard F. Smith, Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Manchester, James P. Smith of Meriden, Brian W. Smith and his wife, Cheryl, of Manchester, Douglas J. Smith of East Hartford; two daughters, Sharon Pasquaretta of Waterford, Sandra T. Mathiau and her husband, Thomas, of East Hartford; eight adored grandchildren, Jeremy and Meagan Smith, Jordan and Morgan Smith, Kevin and Kate Pasquaretta, Bryan and Zachary Mathiau; long-time dear friends, Ronald and Nancy Pelton of East Hartford and their children; several nieces, nephews, and former co-workers. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 29th with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church, Cambridge Drive, East Hartford. (Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church on Wednesday morning). Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Burnside Avenue, East Hartford. Relatives and friends may call at the D'ESOPO-East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford on Tuesday, April 28th from 4–8 p.m. Memorial contributions in Betty's name may be made to a favorite charity of the donor's choice. Betty will be remembered by most for the phrase 'To have a friend, one must be one'. For any on-line expressions of sympathy to the family please visit www.desopo.com.
