Cycling in the 1960s

I was much saddened to hear of Erick's death through the columns of Canadian Cycling. I met him in the mid-1960s after I became involved as a volunteer (as we all were then) in Canadian cycling. I became chair of the National Racing Committee (I was based in Montreal) and became involved in the detailed preparations for the 1967 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg where a new velodrome had been built - much to Erick's delight. I must admit that Erick and I "crossed swords" on a number of occasions - he knew a lot about the sport and had strong opinions. But we always got things sorted out, there was mutual respect and I know he was very proud of the end result, with Marcel Roy winning a Gold Medal for Canada in the Games roadrace on a circuit which I believe Erick had designed, in a national park about 100 miles from the city (I forget the name of it). It was a great moment for Canada, for all of us involved in Canadian cycling - and particularly for Erick. He was a tireless enthusiast, worker and supporter of the sport and I am proud to have known and worked with him. Mike Breckon
