Condolence: I forever will be grateful to Dr. Vanacour for his enthusiasm and support for both my public service career as well as my scholastic endeavors. I first met Marty when working at the City of Glendale. He always was kind, ethical, supportive and reassuring. The City was fabulous when he was at the helm. When he retired, I was honored to have him as mentor and professor as I pursued my MPA and PhD at the ASU School of Public Affairs. I am incredibly saddened to hear of his passing and am comforted in the memories of him. Love, prayers and blessings to his family.

Condolence: Marty was a great family man. I met Marty in 1982 through the MPA program at ASU. I interned and worked with Marty from 1984 to 1989. He was a great mentor and influence on my career. He was so proud of his children and his wife. We lost a great man. My thoughts are with the family today as they honor a great man and a great life.

Condolence: Joyce and Family - I had the honor of working for Marty as a Management Intern in the late 1990s. He influenced my leadership style and mentoring of others, encouraging me to pay it forward. Marty is one of the key reasons I serve in the city management profession today. Years later, I had the pleasure of placing one of my own interns into the ASU MPA Program, as a Marvin Andrews Fellow. The call I got from Marty, then a Professor at ASU, was one of the best moments of my career. Marty was an amazing mentor to anyone with an interest. Many of us continue to work and live by his words "do good", which in so many ways defined him. Marty didn't just do good, he did great. He left us all in a better place.

Condolence From: Deana Wilson and Sue Rutt
Condolence: Marty was such an amazing man. He was more than a City Manager, he treated everyone as equals, he treated his colleagues as friends / family. He had such a big, soft, heart. Stan Van de Putte would have been so proud of him for following the same path that Stan took with employees. It was a very sad day and the beginning of a very different era when Marty left the City of Glendale. We considered Marty to be a very good friend to us and dearly loved him and Joyce and the family. We are so sorry to hear of his passing and will miss him. It's too bad we let our lives and time drift away from us, really wish we could have told him this in person but I'm sure he knows how we felt about him!!!! Still remember him showing up after he bought his red corvette (as he lovingly called it the kidney buster) at our house, I (Deana) somehow got stuck in the hatchback and Sue up front. I couldn't see the speedometer but I had feeling we weren't exactly doing 25mph. We also got to enjoy some country dancing with Marty and Joyce and trivial pursuit games at their house. (Nobody beat Marty) and not because we didn't want to, that man was brilliant. Our deepest Condolences to Joyce, Barbie and Jason!

I am deeply saddened by the news of Marty's passing. A colleague, a leader, a teacher and most important of all, a friend. Marty was a fine City Manager and public servant throughout his stellar career. Glendale has much to thank Marty for as do I and my fellow City Mangers. Marty and I shared many interests and moments as our careers ran in parallel lines. I will remember him always and cherish the influence he has had on my life. My condolences to you and your family. He talked of you and your family with such love and savored the joy he received in the grandfather role. He will be sorely missed, yet has left footprints in the sand for others to follow. I am proud to be his friend and will remain so.
