A Lasting Memory of a Great Man

On December 19, 2016, I attended the Ravens vs. Eagles football game in Baltimore, with John Ausherman, Tim and Ed Sponseller. We had attended a previous game between the two teams and had a terrific time.

I had the privilege of knowing Ed as an educator and a runner. Although I didn't see him often, I looked forward to chatting with him at the Tom Ausherman Memorial 5-Miler every August.

Ed possessed an infectious smile and a positive spirit. Runners were like family to him, and everyone knew and liked Ed.

After the game in December, late in the evening, I received a phone call from my son-in-law, informing me that my grandchildren were born (twins) prematurely, at only 27-weeks.

The next morning, as we ate breakfast, Ed Sponseller was truly an living angel, encouraging me to be positive, and relating to me that his own grandson was born prematurely, and is now a very healthy young men. Ed's kind, selfless words meant very much to me at that stressful moment. I think of Ed's words and his true concern now, as I see my grandchildren at home, healthy and happy.

That morning, as I left the hotel, I thanked Ed, encouraged him to keep fighting his battle, and told him I had hoped to see him soon.

My personal story is a small illustration of this fine man: a true gentleman.

My prayers and sympathy go out to his family, who he loved with all his heart.

The world has lost, but heaven has gained, an angel.

Sincerely,

Joe Muldowney
