Mont Tremblant High School Ski Trip
I was recently cleaning out our folks' house when I came across a few old receipts. One of them was a nicely hand written receipt for $20 - re: Tremblant January 24-26, 1975. Signed Melville Dove. Mel was who we knew him as - the coolest teacher at Thorold High!
Late one Friday night Mel and a busload of eager skiers set off from Thorold Secondary School. The bus drove through the night arriving at our hotel in Saint-Jovite early Saturday morning. We had just enough time to stow our suitcase in the hotel and head off to the ski hill. I can still remember stepping off the bus and taking a deep breath of the cold winter air. Only to feel my nostrils begin to freeze together. I'd never experienced such cold! A great weekend of skiing followed, although it was very, very cold and I remember the runs being very icy after some rain they had received previous to our arrival.
That trip to Tremblant was an experience that I might never had - had it not been organized and chaperoned by Mel. Over the years I have returned to Tremblant several times to ski, as has my wife and son. We grew to love the province of Quebec and have snowmobiled across the whole province.
I remember Mel taking our class hiking in Short Hills Park. Another great outing!
Mel was a great teacher, and a super person! He was well liked by all his students.
I wish I had had the opportunity to thank him again for the memories of Mont Tremblant!
