Mr. Criswell had a particuar affinity for the Tabler Presbyterian Church and would let me know of that assocaition when ever he saw me. He grew up in that church as a child and left when his parents moved to another location but he always recalled with deep affection his time at the church.
One year at Advent time I saw him at a Methodist Church in Martinsburg where we were both attending a music program. He came up to me and asked about the Tabler Church and then asked me for my mailing address in that he wanted to send me something. I anticipated that it was to a Christmas offering which sometimes happens but when I received his mail, I found that it was an offer to deed the church a plot of ground that he owned that was in back of the present building and would give the church a chance to grow.
I called him up and we discussed the gift and i told him I would present it to the Session of the Church as soon as possible and get back to him to complete the necessary paperwork. I found out that years before when he purchased the lot as part of a larger parcel, he had offered to sell it to the church or to exchange it for a right of way. Nothing came of either one and the situation was forgotten. Only Mr. Criswell had not and he wanted to make sure that the little church would have the benefits of an additional area. It now has a pavilion on the lot and has been the location of easter egg hunts for the community, pet blessings, and many other church related activities. We are grateful for Mr.Criswell's generosity and for never forgetting his boy hood church.
