John (Ivan) Lukijanec

Born October 27, 1923 in Zinkiv, Vinnytsia, Ukraine and went to be with his Lord and Saviour on January 1, 2018. John left the Ukraine during World War 2 and worked as a farm labourer and as a butler throughout Europe in places like London, England and Italy. He arrived to Canada and lived in Winnipeg for a short time, then moved to Toronto where he worked as a finishing plasterer, then worked as a supervisor for a cleaning company in downtown Toronto, then worked in the textile industry until his retirement. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Fabok, in 1976 and his second wife, Vera Shesterenko Gnida in 2006. John is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth-Sue Psenicka (Roman Nasadiuk); his sister-in- law Anne Romanuk (late husband Rev. John Romanuk) and family, sister-in-law Mary Fabok (late husband George Fabok) and family, and care-givers: John & Cheryl Polonenko & family, and Paul & Ruth Polonenko & family. John was a faithful Christian and attended the Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Church on Tecumseh Street, and after his marriage to Vera, attended the Russian-Ukrainian Church of Evangelical Christians on Carr Street. He was known for his faith, for being a friend to everyone, a gentleman, an avid gardener, a cook, and was ready for coffee or tea and conversation at any time. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. The service celebrating his life will be held on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 10:30 am at Chapel Ridge Funeral Home, 8911 Woodbine Avenue, Markham, Ontario. Visitation will be held prior to the Service. Interment in Park Lawn Cemetery, Etobicoke. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Slavic Gospel Association, Cambridge, Ontario.
