Although it has been many years since I last saw Harland, he left an impression that will last a lifetime. I first met Harland in 1976 when I joined the Maine Emergency Medical Services Statewide Project staff and he was a liaison to the staff on transportation and highway safety issues. His clear focus and analytical mind bailed me out of many a jam! As much as I came to appreciate his professional abilities, I valued the friendship that developed out of that.
I have yet to learn whether the story is true, but I was told that Harland had been a contestant and a semi-finalist on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts; due to a family issue, he was unable to appear on the final program and lost out to Vic Damone. True or not, I will always believe that it was because it sounds like Harland. Rest in peace, my friend.
