Remembrances of Ian T. Ebel

Ian was born in London, England on June 14, 1939, to Helena and Sidney Ebel. Ian is survived by the love of his life and wife of 53 years, Donna Carlson, their 3 children and 5 grandchildren. He was a fun loving, devoted father to Jennifer, Elissa, and Brian; and the beloved Grandfather of Katherine (Squeeker), Hannah, Jason, Zachery and Christopher. He is also survived by his brother Clive, his wife Jane, many nieces, nephews, friends, and relatives.

Educated in England, Ian was awarded his Higher National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, with endorsements in Aeronautical Engineering, Aircraft Structures, Design and Mathematics from The Cranfield Institute of Technology. While at Cranfield, he was an accomplished swimmer and rower. Ian completed his flight training at the College of Aeronautics and enjoyed the freedom of having his private pilot’s license. In 1952 he backpacked across Europe with his parents and brother, after they had been separated during WWII. That experience began his love of camping, travelling, and following his adventurous spirit through life and as a parent. His love of exploration and quests dubbed the phrase “Dad’s demented tours”.

In 1962 he accepted a teaching position at Brown University in the United States. Ian met Donna who was attending nursing school in Providence, Rhode Island; they got married and started a family.

He loved to experience new things with his family, and valued time together. Ian was in the computer industry during an innovative period and his contributions as an entrepreneur were on the cutting edge of the industry of information and technology.

Ian will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, thirst for knowledge, and supportive nature. He met every person with unconditional love. Ian was generous, always optimistic, and brought joy to every life he touched.
