Life Story for Barry Stephen Silverstein

Barry Stephen Silverstein, age 67, passed away on January 15th, 2018 at his home in Gilbert, AZ.

The Gilbert, AZ visitation will be from 10:00am to 11:00am, Friday, January 19th, 2018 at Falconer Funeral Home, 251 W. Juniper Ave., Gilbert, AZ 85233. Immediately following the visitation will be a memorial service, officiated by Barry Schwartz at the same address at 11:00am. Mr. Silverstein will then be flown to Omaha, NE and taken to the Heafey Hoffman Dworak Cutler Mortuary on 7805 West Center Rd. There will be a visitation at Heafey Hoffman Dworak Cutler Mortuary from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Monday, January 22nd, 2018. The private burial service will be at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, Tuesday morning at 10:00am, officiated by Father Snyder and Rabbi Katzman. Finally there will be a “Celebration of Life” at the Creighton Prep Sullivan Center (west entrance), 7400 Western Ave, Omaha, Tuesday evening, January 23rd, 2018 at 6:30pm.


Barry was born in Brooklyn, NY to Saul Silverstein and Irene Feirburg on March 15, 1950. He went to high school in Brooklyn, NY, graduating in 1968 and he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in social work in 1973 at Peru State College in Peru, NE. He played on Peru’s baseball team for four years. Barry had 3 kids, Marta, Benjamin, and Sarah. He was a 100% disabled veteran of the US Air Force and served in Minot, ND from August 1976 to August 1980. He spent the next 25 years working as a mailhandler for the USPS. In 1997 he met and married Cheryl and together they had a daughter, Hannah, in Sept 1999. From the marriage he also gained a stepson, Robert McCollough, and a stepdaughter, Lyndsay Harrington. Barry retired from the post office in 2004. He was also a loyal public address announcer within the Creighton Prep High School athletic department for 25 years, from the mid-90’s until he finally relocated to Arizona in June of 2011. He announced football, baseball, and basketball for Creighton Prep with a few years of announcing Marian High School’s basketball games as well. He was inducted into the Creighton Prep Hall of Fame in 2013, an honor he was extremely proud of! Other public announcing awards include a 2001 Creighton Prep Athletic Service Award, a 2005-2006 Nebraska High School Announcer of the Year Award, and a 2009 Metro Holiday Tournament Recognition Award.

Barry is preceded in death by his son, Benjamin Alexander Silverstein, August 3, 1997,his Father, Saul Silverstein, June 23,2008, and his Mother, Irene Feirburg Silverstein, December 20th, 1978

Barry is survived by his wife, Cheryl Silverstein, their daughter, Hannah Silverstein, his adult children, Marta Keller and husband Kyle Keller, Sarah Moline and husband Kevin Moline, stepson Robert McCollough, stepdaughter Lyndsay Harrington and husband Paul J Harrington, sister Robin Mancino, grandchildren Isabelle, Ethan, Liam, Owen and Hadley, and nephew Joey Mancino, with special mention of Robin Enscoe, who is Cheryl’s sister and has lived with his family and been his healthy cook for 2-1/2 years.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Moline, Kyle Keller, Dan Schinzel, Josh Leudtke, Steve Gage, and Mark Martinez and Honorary, James Huffman.

Memorials may be given to the Creighton Prep “Barry Silverstein” Scholarship fund.
